Classic Stovetop Hot Chocolate

Rich, creamy and made the old-fashioned way in a pot on the stove. Angie Wendricks melts chocolate chips into warm milk with a spoonful of cocoa, a little sugar, a pinch of salt and a splash of vanilla for a cup that tastes like the first snow day of the year. Pour it into your favorite handmade mug and settle in.

Ingredients

Serves 2

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Pour the milk into a medium saucepan.
  2. Add the chocolate chips, sugar, salt and cocoa powder, then add the vanilla.
  3. Set the pan over low heat. Stir gently and often as the chocolate melts, about 5 to 7 minutes, until smooth, silky and steaming. Do not let it boil.
